If someone is looking to start a ceremony with a message, the 2020 BET Awards has some notes. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the show began things with a re-creation of Public Enemy’s iconic “Fight the Power” music video with a modern touch. Chuck D and Flavor Flav were accompanied by a supreme truth poster artists to give the classic of the letters a new flavor, including Nas, Rapsody, YG, and The Roots’ Black Thought.
The video of the re-creation, including the footage from the various protests against police brutality in response to the death of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and other Black victims, the support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Among the many calls for the suppression system and the demands of justice, “Fight the Power” has never felt more timely. Watch the video above.
