Netflix’s surprise hit The Old Guard it tells the story of a group of immortal mercenaries, led by Andy (Charlize Theron). What Andy actually die in the film, despite being immortal? While that doesn’t die in the screen, the end of the movie implies that she has much less time than she initially thought.
One of the films of the great twists comes halfway through, when Andy gets shot in the stomach and does not heal instantly. His sudden inability to heal is a sign that your immortality has essentially worn out — something that apparently happens to all of the immortal members of the Old Guard at the time. She speculates that it is somehow linked to their new member, the Nile, the become immortal, but that is just a theory that gets there and is not presented as a concrete fact. Since Andy has been live for a couple of thousands of years, at least, not totally out of the blue that she is reaching the end of its life.
Despite the fact that she is no longer immortal and impervious to injury, Andy makes the movie alive, thanks to his own skill and the support of the other immortals. And, true to his character, that he has no plans of retiring to enjoy the rest of your now human life expectancy. The end of the movie shows their leader in the Old Guard, even without his immortality, and with the understanding that any mission that might kill her at this point. She rejects the traitorous Booker, forbidding him from contact with the group for a century — which means that I’m never going to see her again, because even if she withdrew, she would be long dead in a hundred years.
In the comic book that inspired the film, however, this great plot twist never happens! Andy remains immortal in all things, even through the most recent edition of the series. It is understandable why the movie version might have decided to adjust, however. On a narrative level, which without doubt increases the bet to have Andy really vulnerable to injury and/or death, and, on a practical level, if this is destined to become a series and not a stand-alone movie, which gives the filmmakers a way of writing Andy if and when Theron decides to leave.
