DarkNetflix German sci-fi thriller, just got its third and final season June 27, and we can say with certainty that, of all the twists and turns, the third season has some of the most massive reveals yet. A particular character is connected to more than one of these reveals: Silja, the woman that hit the young man Jonas in the final seconds of the first season and that acts as an interpreter to Elisabeth in 2053.
When the last time I saw Silja (Lea van Acken) in season two, she had helped Jonas get to the nuclear plant that the adults Elisabeth Doppler had threatened was out of bounds, which ultimately allows you to use the dark matter to travel to 1921. She is trapped in the plant after Elisabeth and the challenges of their leader as to why the plant was out of bounds, now that she knows what exists, what is possible.
And that is about as far as Silja the story goes-that is, until we get to season three, and she becomes a major player; a vital piece of the Sic Mundus of the puzzle. Read on to find out the role of Silja play in season three, but fair warning, we’re about to spoil a ton of the season, including Silja entire trajectory in the time loops.
At the end of season two, we learn that there is an alternative version of Martha Nielsen, who comes from a parallel reality to save Jonas from the book of revelation. If this first world, Adam’s world — Adam being the Sic Mundus “traveler”, whom Jonas eventually, it becomes an alternative to Marta, the reality is Eva’s world. Eve — women, alt Martha eventually become — is the puppeteer of this world, which is also affected by the recurrence of the time loops of most of our characters. And in both worlds, Silja existence is essential.
In the days of Adam actually, Silja is seen for the first time, holding Martha captive under Adam’s orders in 2053. She travels to 1890, with the aim of preserving one of the first chronological elements of Adam of the loop. There, he meets a frustrated Bartosz Tiedemann in the woods outside of the Tannhaus workshop, you just bury your yellow suit of the plant. The next we see is in 1904, where she is giving birth to her and Bartosz’s son, whom she names of Hanno, and then again in 1910 when she dies in childbirth with a daughter, Agnes. This somber and subtle moment is the form of learning that Silja and Bartosz are the parents of the man who will become a Noah (we’ll also give you a minute to process that Bartosz procreated with the half of her grandmother). Although this is what ends up of Silja’s life in this reality, this is not the last that we see of her, nor is this the biggest reveal involving his character.
In a flashback scene in 1911, we see Hannah Kahnwald — who was having an affair and getting pregnant with 1954 Egon Tiedemann the last time they saw her approach adult Bartosz in front of the Tannhaus of the property. Look at Ana, confused to see her there, almost the same age she had when I was a teenager. Then looks at the young Hannah with — she is maybe 5 or 6 and has a very distinguishable scar on his face. “Silja?”, he whispers. From here, Hannah introduces young people Silja Jonas as his half-sister; however, Jonas has become a young Adam by this point, hell-bent on keeping their reality loops intact.
So this is where things get, ahem, dark.
We know from the first season in about 10-15 years from now, Silja should be living in postapocalyptic winden as a young woman. Knowing this, Adam says to Hannah in front of a dream Silja that the girl is not where it needs to be. That has to be taken to where she belongs so that she can meet with Jonas when he travels to 2052. Two steps ahead of everything, as usual, Adam anticipates that Hannah is likely to have a problem with her daughter from her, so it drowns out his own mother with a pillow and takes it to his sister out of the room.
And that is all that we know and we need to know about Silja’s full loop in Adam’s world. However, things are not so clear on the Eve of the world. We know Silja has to exist in this reality with the end of Agnes, and therefore Tronte, Ulrich, and their children, to exist — they do — but Ana is pregnant with Ulrich of the baby in Eva’s world, so that *technically* may not be Silja cook there. We see Anne get a visit from the old Egon, that the visit of Eva orders for “create your past and preserving your family tree,” minutes before the November revelation in the reality, but it is not clear that the couple go from there. Loose ends exist for sure, but Silja has to be born on the Eve of the world at some point!
*shrugs to all of you who still do not know or do not understand about Darkalthough it is more*
TL;DR: Hannah — cheat, snoop, bully, liar, and without a doubt one of the most evil characters in the entire show — gives birth to a daughter named Silja and ends up being the only reason that most of our characters were born. Agnes and Noah; Tronte; Ulrich and Mads; Magnus, Martha, and Mikkel; and, therefore, his own son, Jonas. WILD.
