I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us in the house, because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to your health. But today, I feel like I should comment that because of the stigma and misconceptions about mental health.”
She opened up about the experience of seeing a loved one struggle with their mental health, saying: “Those that understand mental illness or even the compulsive behavior to know that the family is helpless, unless the member is a minor. People who are not aware of, or away from this experience can be critical and not understand that the individual has to be involved in the process of getting help, no matter how hard the family and friends try to.”
Kim also touched on Kanye’s personal trials, adding, “He’s a brilliant but complex person at the top of the pressures of being an artist and a black man, who has experienced the painful loss of his mother, he has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is enhanced by her bipolar disorder. Those who are close with Kanye to know his heart and understand his words sometimes do not align with their intentions.” She then testifies to Kanye’s talents, saying: “Living with bipolar disorder does not diminish or negate their dreams and their creative ideas, no matter how big or impossible it may feel to some. That is part of his genius, and as we have all been witnesses, many of your big dreams have become a reality.” She ended the statement calling for “compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this.”
