Not even the visit of an Assistant of Kelly himself could walk away from this adorable Proud Of The Family reunion. In a video shared to The NAACP Digital’s YouTube channel on Thursday, the main cast and producer Bruce Smith remembered their favorite aspects of the series at the conclusion of the next Proud Family: louder and prouder reboot in Disney+. Keke Palmer — a Proud Of The Family superfan, and the new member of the crew of Disney — moderated the panel. Almost two decades after the program premiered on the Disney Channel, Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama), and Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby) still embody their characters in the best of ways.

In addition to dancing along to the show’s theme song and act like a real family, the cast also spoke of the importance of the representation of the dynamics of a Black family in a time where the Black community was very poorly represented on the screen. “The magic behind the characters and the relationships behind us not even seeing each other was fair, it is simply magical,” said Payton. “I could walk back in the sound room at any time and relate to all of you because you are part of me. I feel for you. I can feel your energy. I feel the beating of your heart.”
The next restart to see Penny, Oscar, Trudy, Bobby, Suga Mama, Bebe, Cece, and even all of Penny’s old friends return to the screen. Palmer will play the role of Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, a 14-year old activist who is independent, mature for his age, and “not hesitate to shut down anyone with his blunt honesty and wisdom.” Maya is the adopted daughter of mixed race parents and is new in the city. While she is initially doubtful about making new friends, Penny works hard to earn your respect and friendship.
