Wondering Why Captain Marvel 2 Is Called The Marvels? Here's What to Know

The second installation of Captain Marvel is coming out, and it’s officially titled The Marvels! Marvel Studios just dropped news about upcoming projects in a zippy trailer detailing release dates for a handful of MCU movies in the works. If you’re wondering why The Marvels isn’t called Captain Marvel 2, you’re definitely not alone. Directed by Candyman‘s Nia DaCosta, the upcoming film, slated for release on Nov. 11, 2022, will star both Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and newcomer Iman Vellani’s teenage superhero, Ms. Marvel. Long story short, we’ll be getting more than just Carol Danvers!

If you’re curious about the new characters in the upcoming film, it might be time to hit Disney+. Vellani will be playing Marvel’s first onscreen Muslim superhero in the series Ms. Marvel, which is to be released later in 2021 on the Disney streaming service. Additionally, we’ll also be seeing Teyonah Parris return as Monica Rambeau. WandaVision fans will recall that Parris made her MCU debut on WandaVision, in which she portrayed the S.W.O.R.D. agent investigating Westview with FBI agent Jimmy Woo. Monica doesn’t technically have a Marvel moniker yet, but we’ve got to keep two things in mind: First, it’s safe to assume that she has some kind of relationship with Captain Marvel herself since Carol was her mother’s best friend. More importantly, Monica was actually Captain Marvel in the comics! If you saw her in WandaVision, you’ll recall that she received powers from the Scarlet Witch’s Hex — we’re definitely going to see more of this soon.

As a quick aside, The Marvels does have a different connotation in the comics. The Marvels aren’t exactly a team, which we would probably expect of the upcoming film. Instead, the term refers to the superpowered characters in the Marvel universe . . . which would encompass quite a few more characters. Created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, the Marvels comics, first released in 1994, are focused on revisiting early Marvel days through the perspective of a photojournalist named Phil Sheldon. Not only do they include a wide range of superheroes, but these comics also span over decades. Could we see such a zoomed-out framing in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel? It’s unlikely, but it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility!

In any case, it’s clear that the focus of The Marvels won’t solely be on Carol Danvers — it’ll be an exciting ride to see some of the most powerful female leads from the Marvel comics come together on screen!
