John Legend is using his voice to uplift the Black community. On Saturday, at 41 years of age, the singer appeared on the YouTube “to bear Witness, take Action” event — that united Black activists, leaders and artists to perform a cover of Bob Marley’s 1980 hit, “Redemption Song”. The legend beautifully crooned about liberation and emancipation while playing the piano to your home. “Won’t you help to sing These songs of freedom? / ‘Cause all I ever have / Redemption songs,” he belted.
The virtual meeting, organized by the Common and Keke Palmer, featured round tables and panels on racism and the nuances of the Black experience. Among the guests were Sterling K. Brown, mental health advocate Jouelzy, artist Patrisse Cullors, writer Roxane Gay, and more. The live broadcast raised more than $1 million for the The Equal Justice Initiativethat helps put into practice the social justice through efforts to bring an end to mass incarceration and excessive punishment, as well as the leveling of racial and economic inequalities. See the Legend of the performance above, then take a look at the entire event.
