Ashley Marina America’s Got Talent the hearing is the proof that, sometimes, the third time really is the charm. At the age of 12, the singer made her debut in an episode of the competition series, which aired on Tuesday, but didn’t quite go as well as expected. The lovely Pittsburgh native and a guinea pig owner took the stage and began singing Martina McBride “anyway”. About half way through the performance, judge Simon Cowell pause to ask if he could sing a song a capella, explaining, “I think you have a good voice. It is a good song, but not the right one for you, the first one.” (We’ll have to agree to disagree on that one, Cowell.)

Without hesitation, Marina with confidence launched in the Sia of the “Opportunity” of 2014 Annie the soundtrack, but before she could finish the first stanza, Cowell intervened again. “I think you brought the evil the songs of today,” he said, adding that he would return later that day to re-audition with a new song choice. Navy wound up choosing a tear-jerking original song about his father, titled “You’ll Always be My Hero,” and the boy, she nails it.

As she crooned the heartfelt lyrics, everyone in the crowd rose to their feet to cheer her on, and some were even spotted shedding tears. In the end, Cowell gave him a well deserved thumbs up, signaling that she finally got her seal of approval.
