Less than three weeks into 2021, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” is already my favorite song of the year. Professional dancer Matt Steffanina took the song’s heartbreaking storyline to a new level in this stunning couples choreography routine that beautifully illustrates pain, love, and growth. “And I know we weren’t perfect, but I’ve never felt this way for no one,” Rodrigo sings overhead as two dancers in matching plaid shirts move in perfect sync to her words, injecting the lyrics with a palpable sense of heartache.
If it’s possible to have a song of the summer five months before the season has even begun, this is it. So if anyone would like to sign my petition to have “Drivers License” turned into its own mini musical, you’re welcome to be the second signature on the list.
