Netflix’s new fantasy series, Damn, is scheduled to hit the streaming service this summer. It is the latest iteration of the Arthurian legend, with the legendary feel of The Witcher and epic fight scenes reminiscent of Game of Thronesdesigned for a young-adult-and-above the audience. Damn is the introduction of a list of people, and is Devon Terrell that putting Arthur in Arthurian.

If Devon looks familiar, there’s a good reason. First hit the screens back in 2016, portraying a young President Barack Obama during his college years Netflix the brilliant biographical film, Barry. At the time, Netflix was not the entertainment giant that it is now, so it kind of flew under the radar. The good news is, you can still catch his portrait of Obama on the streaming service. Not only does it offer a vision of how the future could be 44th president of the united States to navigate its third year at the University of Columbia, but Devon absolutely nails his iconic voice and gestures.

Fast-forward to 2020, and the Australian-American actor has joined the cast of Damnstepping into the shoes of another character well known: a teen that is going to be one day King Arthur (or so says the legend). Damn centers in Nimue (played by Katherine Langford), who is an outcast of his village because of his dark, magical powers. But when his entire village is massacred, his dying mother tasks her with the return of the Energy Sword to Merlin. Along the way, he meets a mercenary named Arthur.

Devon casting as Arthur is significant in more ways than one. This is the first time that the character of Arthur takes a seat to another leader (and a woman, no less), but it is also the first time that a Black actor has been cast in this role, a role historically played by white actors. In the Damn set in London again in the year 2019, Devon told POPSUGAR that is excited for the release. “There are not many characters of fantasy for young people, Black people — both men and women,” he said. “So it’s very exciting that young people, of any ethnicity really, it’s going to be able to see themselves in this because I am a young mixed race guy and I would have been so excited to see myself on the screen, so when I was younger.”

Damn it will be released on Netflix this summer.
