Miley Cyrus has opened up about his journey with sobriety, revealing that she has been officially “sober sober” for six months. In a recent interview at the iHeartRadio podcast The Big Ticket, Miley said: “it has been very important for me during the last year of living a sober lifestyle, because I really wanted to perfect my art.” The topic of sobriety is not new to Miley, which has been outspoken of his experiences with smoking marijuana in the past and has been very open about his drug use in general of the means of social communication.

Miley explained that his sobriety began in November, when she had a surgery on her vocal chords and was on a strict prohibition of speaking during four weeks, in order to recover properly. While recovering, she said her thought about the history of the family. “I had been thinking a lot about my mother,” said Miley. “My mom was adopted, and I have inherited some of the feelings that she had, and the neglect of the feelings and wanting to prove that you are loved and valuable. My dad’s parents divorced when he was 3, so my dad got up. I did a lot of the history of the family, which has a lot of addiction and mental health problems. So just going through that and wondering, ‘Why am I the way I am?’ To understand the past, understand the present and to the future with much more clarity.”

Miley also admitted that it is difficult, as a young person, to take the decision of being sober, because there is often a stigma attached to it. People assume that “you’re not funny,” but she said that is not a problem for her because she knows that she is a good time. “The thing that I love is the awakening of 100 percent, 100 percent of the time,” said Miley. “I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready to go.”
