Michaela Coel in Personal Stories Behind I Can Destroy

Michaela Coel’s I Can Destroy is the breakout feminist of the series of 2020. After the success of the comedy-dramas such as Issa Rae Unsafe and Phoebe Waller-Bridge Fleabag, Coel, we had a chat with Jimmy Fallon about how his real-life experiences of putting I Can Destroy in a league of its own.

Streaming safely from his East London flat, Coel uk The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to share their unique mechanisms to calm anxiety in the lock and the poignant personal stories that inspired the pairing of comedy and tragedy in I Can Destroy. “My brother came to stay with me, and I asked him, do you want to dance in the park?”, she says. “He has his own headphones, I got mine, and we go to the park, and we began to dance. Every now and again, despite the fact that we are listening to independent music, the rhythm, falls on the same time, and we began to do the same movement,” he says with enthusiasm.

Michaela natural in the narrative in Fallon mirrors the formula of their work to I Can Destroy. Soon after sharing that she has been dancing to deal with the anxiety, she elaborates on how her new series destigmatizes the sensitive subject of rape by the pairing with humor. Michaela explained to Fallon that this kind of pairing is, naturally, inspired by his own life. She shares an anecdote of when she was in the investigation room of the police preparing to give my first statement of the witnesses, and I sat there kind of realize that the course of my life was forever going to change. I was kind of realizing that something bad had happened, and my friend was taking care of me, and I looked at him, I realized that I was playing Pokémon and Go on your phone. It was a bit like. . . Where am I? What is everything? What a circus. What is going on? It is rape and Pokémon to Go and I don’t know what to do with those two things. But, here they are, in a room”.
