Just looking at the description of the series, you might wonder if Netflix is Ratched it is part of the American Horror Story universe. Ryan Murphy’s upcoming horror series stars Sarah Paulson as Nurse Ratched, the infamous villain of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nestand explores the beginning of his career in a disturbing asylum, and how she became the legendary villain. Although it sounds like you might fit in the horror anthology very well, Ratched it is not, in fact, part of American Horror Story.

Ratched without doubt takes on some of the issues that previous seasons of American Horror Story have. The most obvious connection, of course, would have been the season two, also known as American Horror Story: Asylumthat seems to be at least a little inspired by One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and similar stories of mental institutions as the site of the horrors. There is even the cast of connection: Paulson, who is playing Nurse Ratched now, he was the protagonist in Asylum so. Then, however, it was one of the good guys: a dedicated journalist with the hope of finding the truth behind a serial killer’s spree, and to close the asylum when he learns of its horrors.

From Asylum it was one of the best received stations American Horror Story, it makes sense that Murphy and his team might be interested in reviewing some of the tropes that happened there. In a sense, however, the success of the season is another reason why Ratched probably could not have functioned as an installment of the horror anthology; we’ve already covered a lot of the same ground. Of course, the biggest obstacle would be legal. From One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest it is now its own famous title and the property, it would be incredibly unlikely that the American Horror Story the team would be able to get the rights to bring a pre-existing title and the characters in his universe.

The cast of Ratched, however, is something of a American Horror Story inter-season crossover event! Along with Paulson, other AHS the vets in the cast include Jon Briones (Revelation) and Finn Wittrock (who has appeared in five seasons, most recently in 1984) — that are scheduled for the main roles in the new show — and we can’t wait to see how it all develops!
