Hulu Awakened Trailer Highlights the Realities of Systemic Racism

New Girl‘s Lamorne Morris star in Hulu’s upcoming comedy series Woke upand if you’re still reeling by the end of Sorry to Bother Youyou might want to check out as soon as possible. The series follows Keef (Morris), a cartoonist on the brink of success whose life is turned upside down after the police about to arrest him for a crime he did not commit. Prior to the incident, Keef preferred to keep it “light” and ignore the thinly veiled racism around him. But the misunderstanding leaves him with reason to be agitated, and is set to incite the much-needed social and political change with the help of their cartoons come to life.

Keef the new conception of the world, after his encounter with the police causes him to hear voices and talking to inanimate objects that take on the appearance of the characters in his cartoons. These voices encourage him to take action in response to cases of police brutality and systemic racism that permeate their everyday life and to challenge those around him to do the same. Inspired by the life of cartoonist Keith Knight, Woke up faces the struggles the Black community faces in America today and take a look at the importance of identity and culture through the comedy lens.
