As Joe Biden’s newly announced running mate, Senator Kamala Harris is one of the largest in the world of projectors, and her husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, is right there at your side. The story of how Harris met your husband is very sweet — and, perhaps surprisingly, very normal.
In the course of his work as an attorney specializing in entertainment, Emhoff became acquainted with filmmaker Reginald Hudlin, one of his firm’s clients, and his wife, PR consultant Chrisette Hudlin. As told to NBC News, the Hudlins set up a blind date in 2013 Emhoff with a friend of theirs, who turned out to be Harris. “Oh my god, she is hot,” Emhoff in jest, recalled thinking when he realized that he recognized Harris from his work as attorney general.
Harris elaborated quite a bit on their first meeting and first impressions in his book of memoirs, The Truths That We Have. “The morning after our first date, Doug sent me an e-mail with a list of their available dates for the next couple of months. “I’m too old to play games or hide the ball,” the email read. ‘I really like, and I want to see if we can make this work,'” she revealed. Harris had never been married before, but Emhoff had; he shares two children with his first wife, film producer Kerstin Emhoff. In his memoirs, Harris also revealed his secret for making a good first impression when she met her future stepchildren: bring cookies! Apparently, it worked — Harris has revealed on several occasions that your stepkids playfully to call her “Momala.”
Meeting Emhoff children, Harris wrote in a 2019 Elle the article, was as important as the meeting Emhoff himself. “Doug and I put a lot of thought into when and how I was going to first meet the children. And that meant that they expected,” she wrote. “I was already engaged to Doug, but I think it was Cole, and She wobbled on me.” In addition, shared Elleshe ended up becoming friends of Emhoff’s ex-wife Kerstin as well. “Kerstin is an amazing mother. Kerstin and I took ourselves and are very dear friends . . . We sometimes joke that our modern family is almost a little too functional.”
