Even if you’ve seen all 13 episodes of season three of 13 Reasons Whythere is a possibility that you do not remember a single thing. The season is centered around Bryce Walker murder, but since the time line is not chronological and instead confusing AF, you may have already forgotten that another major character ends up dead: a Montgomery Cross. Seeing as season four drops on 5 June, which now seems a good time to review what happened to Monty 13 Reasons Why‘s the third season and led to his unexpected (and completely abrupt) death in a prison cell.
Season three picks up after the events of Spring Fling, when Tyler is shown Below to the dance armed with a gun. Monty of the story, however, does not pick up until the summer after the third year, when going to a Hillcrest party and meets with Winston Williams. The two hook, but when Winston asks Monty to “hang out sometime” in front of his friends, Monty panics and beats him up. In a surprising move, Bryce convinces someone to take the Sat in Winston’s place without Winston’s knowledge, and Bryce, then bribes him with the order to ensure that Winston’s relationship with Monty is kept in secret.
Senior year begins, and Monty looks to Winston in the Freedom-Hillcrest homecoming game for the first time since Monty gave him a punch. Monty apologies for the way it behaved, Winston forgives him, and then the two spend the night together at Winston house. That ends up being the same night in which Bryce is killed, which means that Monty has a solid alibi — but only Winston knows.
After returning home, an articulation of Freedom-Hillcrest assembly is the place to discuss the fight that broke out in the field. During the meeting, Jessica Davis invites all survivors of sexual assault to stand up and own their own stories, which finally gives Tyler Down the courage to report Monty’s horrific attack of the third year of high school. He goes to the police station and officially files a report, and soon, Monty is arrested and imprisoned.
During that same Freedom Hillcrest assembly, Clay Jensen is falsely arrested for the death of Bryce, but the new girl Ani Achola clears his name when he speaks to the Deputy Standall, who she has been narrating his witness throughout this season (though, of course, this does not become clear until the end of the season). Ani tells Deputy Standall that Clay had been driving around with it all night on the night of Bryce’s death, giving him an alibi. She also tells Alex that the dad of that Monty may have been the one to kill Bryce, saying that Monty threatened Bryce the night of the game. That is when the Deputy Standall breaks the news that Monty was murdered in his jail cell just a few hours before. Um . . . what?
It is not clear exactly how Monty was killed and why, but we have the feeling that Winston is going to play an important role in the show’s fourth (and last) season, so hopefully we can get some more details about what happened.
