Late Night With Seth Meyers writer Amber Ruffin has “a thousand stories” traumatic police run-ins. She has been detained while listening to Busta Rhymes, called by a police officer for delivery to his friend his wallet, and, to the barrel of a gun, simply to jump into an alley. These are just some of their traumatic experiences, but she was willing to share them publicly for a full week on the NBC show as its opening segment.
“The cops have pulled a gun on me, the cops have followed me to my own house,” she explained. “And every Black person I know has a couple of stories like that. Many have more than a couple. Black people leave the house each day knowing that, at any time, we could get killed by the police.”
Their stories are heartbreaking, but, unfortunately, are not unique. As a result of the protests around the country continue to honor George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and a number of other persons killed as a result of the brutality of the police, it is imperative to remember the assault Black people face on a daily basis.
Amber closed her last segment of the week in honor of those who have died during demonstrations across the country by name. “Don’t let it cost more lives,” he said. “Vote, call their representatives, cease to be a friend of the racist, and what is more important, when you see something, say something, do something, get loud. Don’t let people get away with racist shit, not anymore. It’s a new day”. Listen to and learn from their experiences by watching the full video above.
