Dirty John‘s second season premiered on Monday, and already we have asked what Betty Broderick is up to these days. Because if Amanda Peet central performance tells us anything, his true story is one to view. After shooting to death her ex Dan (Christian Slater) and his young wife Linda in 1989, Broderick, as was expected, he landed in jail. But, did you ever get out of jail? The answer is a firm no, and here is why.

Broderick’s story begins with her and Dan as a university engaged couples in building a life together. Even with four childrenshe bent down and kept his family afloat financially, while Dan went to law school and medical school to eventually become a medical malpractice lawyer in San Diego. Their love story came down with a hostile environment, the divorce that even had Oprah raising her eyebrows. Dan met with his young secretary, Linda Kolkena, in particular, by calling your ex names and even put her in a mental hospital. (To be clear, his ex-wife also fought against him for the smearing of the cake in your bed and driving in the door of his house, among other things.) Months after that Linda and Dan officially tied the knot, Broderick snuck into his house and killed with a gun in Nov. 5, 1989.

In 1991, Broderick received two charges of second-degree murder and faced a sentence of 32 years to life. In his high-profile trial, she he said that Dan was abusive. She is currently serving a sentence in the California Institution For Women, now 72 years of age. In 2010, California, the parole board denied his request for parole, as they do not show remorse or admit to wrongdoing. It also denied his parole in the year 2017 as well. Broderick won’t be eligible for parole again until January 2032. However, this date may change depending on factors such as the good conduct.
