My love for reading is before my passion for almost anything, and while pages and pages of fantasies and magical adventures have entered my life through the years, none has stuck with me in the same way as Matilda. At six and a half years of age, this lovely girl could control the world around you with the wink of an eye or the wave of a finger, and she became my role model. Even more than the book by Roald Dahl, the movie of 1996 made magic a reality in my mind, and there was nothing I wanted more than to accompany Matilda, on a trip to the library or help him or her to Miss Trunchbull’s (Pam Ferris) house to steal back Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) Lissy doll.
Now, as an adult, I find it impossible to think that I could ever really exceed my connection to Matilda (Mara Wilson) or his magical ways. If anything, seeing this incredible film in the last two decades has only further shaped who I am as a person and you saved my love for all things fantastic live, whether on a screen, in the pages of a book, or — sometimes — in the world around me. Here are some of the reasons why this lovely film has stood the test of time, nearly 25 years after its release.
