When Are the Golden Globes in the year 2021?

With the COVID-19 pandemic pushing movie releases further back, to the question of when the Golden Globes will be in 2021 (and, in fact, when other award shows will be) has been swirling for a while. After several weeks of consideration, the Foreign Press Association of Hollywood announced Monday that the 2021 ceremony, as predicted, moved again. Here is everything you need to know about the new date and how it could affect the rest of the awards season.

In a statement to Variety, the HFPA announced the new date for the 2021 Golden Globes: Feb. 28, 2021. Normally, the Balloons are held on the first Sunday of January, serving as the unofficial start to the two-month award season which generally culminates with the Oscars in late February or early March. This year, however, the whole process moves backward. “To accommodate both national and international film and television productions, the HFPA will provide further guidance regarding eligibility, voting period and revised the announcement of the nominations of timing in the coming weeks,” the HFPA said Variety.

This announcement is not really a surprise, and comes on the heels of the previous week’s announcement that the delivery of the Oscar, too, is going to delay, moving to April. 25, 2021, the vacating of the date of February. 28 the ceremony of the Golden Globes has now taken. Now that the dates of the major ceremonies have been moved, however, the question now turns to the film of eligibility. Deadline reported at the time of the delivery of the Oscars’ announcement that the window of eligibility for the Oscar contenders has been expanded: now, the movies between Jan. 1 and Feb. 28, 2021 will also be allowed to compete in the 2021 ceremony, in place of the previous (and traditional) Dec. 31 court date. The Oscars also have temporarily relaxed their rules around the transmission of films, allowing the films that were originally released on streaming or video-on-demand platforms to compete with the cinema of the press, since so many movies were incapable of scoring runs in the cinemas due to the pandemic.

It is sure to be a unusual prize of the season, and there are probably more changes to come!
