Twyla is Schitt’s Creek Secret Changed the Rose of Life

If someone had ever told me that I was going to love the Rose family as much as I do now, I wouldn’t have believed them. Schitt’s Creek‘s Johnny (Eugene Levy), Moira (Catherine O’hara), David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) were a misfit bunch of characters that began immensely rich, and they were too trapped in their own bubble to realize it. But, by the series finale, that everything has changed for the better, thanks to the town of Schitt’s Creek and the people who lived there, especially Twyla Sands.

From behind the counter with a hot pot of coffee in hand, Twyla seen as Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis became his own people out of their wealth.

Supportive, kind, and a fantastic listener, Twyla is without a doubt one of the best friends of the Rose family throughout the series. She gives Johnny a useful (if not interesting) advice when he needs it; she puts Moira is virtually unintelligible vocabulary; and she is always there to give Alexis relationship advice Ted or Mutt — both of whom are his exes. She even told Moira that she liked her performance in the The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening trailer (it is not an easy task), than it really is Twyla the hero of Schitt’s Creek.

While she has been there for the Roses from the day they moved to Schitt’s Creek, Twyla has also housed a great secret. During the end of the season, Twyla admits to Alexis before the Roses were moved to the city, she had earned about $46 million in the lottery and had been keeping the news to herself for all these years. The look of shock on Alexis ‘ face of the mirror, as I watched from my blanket cocoon, completely thrown for a loop. But Twyla’s reasoning for keeping the money in secret was not selfish. In fact, it was very . . . Twyla of it.

She knew that the effects of money could have on people, and she does not want to be treated differently because of it. She was comfortable working in the Cafe Tropical and be close to all the people who had grown up with. It is in this way that Twyla acts as a complete contrast to the Roses, who had spent the last three years fighting to win back even a portion of the ridiculous amount of wealth that he had once had.

At the end of season six, Twyla tries to give Alexis what it is to be assumed that a large check as a going away present before she goes to New York, insisting that will help you begin with your new life. When Alexis (only a little reluctantly) refuses and hands the check back, shows how much he has grown and developed confidence in the idea that she can take care of itself. Had Twyla handed him the cheque for three years before Alexis would have never met Ted or friends with people outside of their social circle, and she never would have learned to be comfortable by itself.

The rest of the Rose family, also would have hightailed out of town if she had given any of them a check like that, but in the background Twyla knew that that was not what either of them needs it the most. In addition to his infinite words of wisdom and well-intentioned advice over the years, Twyla was the teaching of the Roses, an important lesson by keeping the money in secret. She was showing that monetary wealth may seem important, but the friendship and feeling comfortable with yourself as a person is what’s really valuable. From behind the counter with a hot pot of coffee in hand, Twyla seen as Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis became his own people out of their wealth, and for that, we as fans will always be grateful.
