The President, Versus The Governor: 5 Major Differences

Every day, since our primary focus, became this horrific, pandemic, many public officials, provide daily briefings. Many Mayors, County Executives, Governors, and the President, have done so! Although the style of each of these individuals, significantly differs, the supposed intent, of each, was to inform the public, hopefully reducing anxieties, addressing concerns, and introducing the most appropriate actions, forward. While, I have only heard, bits – and – pieces, of may of these, I have observed some of President Trump’s and the majority of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s briefings. Because, Trump’s became (or appeared, to me), to be, more rhetoric/ promises/ distortions/ poltically motivated, etc, I only watch, highlights, rather than have my time wasted, by his dog – and – pony show. On the other hand, New York’s Governor, consistently, provides details, his reasoning/ rationale, a well – considered message/ plan, and significant updates, etc. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, 5 major differences, of these daily briefings, between the President, and this Governor.

1. Tone/ Empathy: The first difference, which is immediately obvious, is the tone difference, between these two men! While Cuomo, clearly exhibits true, genuine empathy, the same cannot be said, for the present occupant of the White House! Never before, have we witnessed, in recent memory, any previous President, refuse to apologize, take any personal responsibility, or truly, seem to care deeply, about the health, and well – being, of the public!

2. Accuracy: It should come, as little surprise, to any objective observer, how little respect for accuracy, and/ or, honesty, President Trump, exhibits! Political fact – checkers proclaim, he has lied, etc, at an alarming rate, prior to this pandemic. His statements, from the start of the public’s awareness of this pandemic, have, at best, been inconsistent, and, at worst, perhaps, dangerous/ reckless/ irresponsible! Beginning, by calling it a hoax, after apparently ignoring/ minimizing earlier warnings from the World Health Organization, and our Intelligence Agencies, he articulates, how great his response has been, and never accepting any personal responsibility/ fault. On the other hand, the Governor has, consistently, provided, data – driven, clear briefings, explaining risks, expectations, and what is needed, and necessary, to safely proceed, forward, in a sane way, into the future!

3. Focus on the science, versus his gut: While Cuomo emphasizes science, and data, Trump, often, ignores/ denies the science, and, even his own experts, and articulates his beliefs, as fact! When the President, even, off- handedly, makes statements, such as using disinfectants, internally (later, claiming he was being sarcastic), and often, manipulating, and/ or, misstating what actually occurred, and expert projections, etc, isn’t that dangerous?

4. Planning: While one man stresses the need, to carefully plan ahead, and do so, based on data and science, carefully, in order to protect the public health, the other, often, seems to proceed, haphazardly, without any degree of proper planning! Which man is behaving, like a real leader?

5. True/ trust/ trustworthy: While, polls clearly indicate, Governor Cuomo, is considered trustworthy, this President is often considered, the least trustworthy individual, to ever hold the office, at least, in recent memory! While the Governor focuses on the truth, and facts, whether they are popular or not, the President seems to prioritize his personal/ political agenda, and self – interest! Why would most of the public trust anyone, who rarely seems to tell the truth?

Wake up, America, because, if you don’t, we risk a public health – fiasco, larger than anything, we have witnessed, to – date! When will you be ready? If you aren’t already, Sick and tired, of being sick and tired, and not going to take it anymore (the famous words, from Network), ask yourself, why not, and what would it take, to get you to open – your – eyes, be outraged, and demand far better!
