Grammy-winning country group Lady Antebellum, the newly appointed Lady, are one of the more recent examples of celebrities and brands with the hope of getting ahead of any possible reaction in the wake of Black Lives Matter. The national movement has turned a purge of layoffs in the entertainment industry, with four Vanderpump Rules starsLana Del Rey, and Glee is Lea Michele they all face serious scrutiny for racially insensitive observations and incidents. In order to avoid the imminent cancellation, A-listers and big businesses alike, have announced statements in support of the protests, but some of these preemptive apologies, including Lady A long overdue rebranding, resonate as flat and performative.

The trio, comprised of Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood, announced on 11 June that “antebellum,” a racially charged term that refers to the pre-Civil War era, will be dropped from his name. In a lengthy social media post (below), the band explains how, in the last few weeks of protests that have sparked in the group to the insensitivity of his old name. They took responsibility for the lack of understanding that led to the realization of the antebellum title for more than a decade. Now, take the old nickname of his official, the Lady in A hope to move forward in their crusade for inclusion and against racism.

But your attempt to be sensitive to the plight of Black fans inadvertently led to a conflict with the blues singer Anita White, a Black woman that has been conducted under the name of A Lady of more than 20 years. Apparently, Lady Antebellum don’t check to see if your new name was already taken, and if they did, never became White to discuss the adoption of the same.

After the original of the Lady he conveyed his very understandable frustrations in a Rolling Stone interview, saying that the country as a whole only changed her name to appease the current times, the two parties had a Zoom discussion. “Today, we have connected privately with the artist, A Lady,” the group wrote via Instagram. “Transparent, honest and authentic conversations that are had. We are very happy to share that we are moving forward with positive solutions and a common ground. Damage that is becoming the hope. More to come.” Meanwhile the Lady As she was smiling in the Instagram post (below), there has been no announcement about them to agree on any positive solutions to the moment.

Did this embarrassing slip-up for the same reason, which is performed under an oppressive artistic name of 14 years: a white privilege that often does not require them to think twice.

Lady Antebellum’s change of name gaffe was easily avoidable, but is that this embarrassing slip-up for the same reason, which is performed under an oppressive artistic name of 14 years: a white privilege that often does not require them to think twice. The band said that its original name was inspired by the antebellum-era house, where they were first photographed, never associating the beginning of the times in which it was built, in spite of the antebellum era that is taught in high school history classes across the nation.

If you learned about the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, and General Robert E. Lee, the odds are that you have learned about the antebellum era as well. Playing devil’s advocate, if it is assumed that in reality were ignorant to the term of its origins, which is another sign of his ability to lead a successful life without having to be aware of the history of racial oppression and violence in this country.

The white of the band has not personally had to deal with the historical trauma and injustice that continually plague the Black community. The music of the country and its culture that surrounds afford the luxury of white fans and musicians the space to never worry about this kind of associations and reminders, even when they are still recognized by the industry of the Black fans. This Instagram user perfectly summed up what it feels like to be a Black fan of country music in your post viral, which describes how the culture of the country, has often excluded her from a sense of belonging in the fandom.

Despite the fact that she has not yet comments after the Zoom of the call, White originally said Rolling Stone she believes that the name of the group of change arises not from genuine feelings, arguing that it was a trick designed to appease the moment. “They are using the name because of a Black Lives Matter incident that, for them, is a moment in time,” he said. “If it mattered, it would have mattered to them before. Should not have been George Floyd to die for them to realize that his name had been a slave reference to it.”

Although misguided and, potentially, just for the fact to save face, the band apology is necessary if the entertainment industry is changing for the better. However, it is vital to recognize that this instance ignorance was not an error or simply by the course of the trial. It was the product of an industry that I was not too concerned with the inclusion to celebrity began to lose their offers. Lady have set an important precedent in the possession of their evil actions, but hopefully the next person to step forward recognizes the system and the privilege of allowing their actions to happen, and not only the illegality of the action itself.
