Janelle Monaé is one of the three women that appear in Variety‘s Power of Women issue this year. In addition to his incredible monochrome photo session, at 34 years of age, the singer and actress gave an enlightening interview discussing racial injustice and the importance of amplifying the voices of women.
In the wake of the death of George Floyd, Janelle emphasize how important it is for people, especially white people, to wake up to the realities of police brutality and racism. “We need more people within these places, in the interior of these precincts, and these buildings on foot, and to march and to be there with us,” he said. Janelle also does not refrain from speaking his mind when it came to President Trump, adding, “This administration, along with the president, that is wrong”.
“We are aligned it is important and powerful in the face of those in the position of power that have the aim of dividing.”
In an accompanying video for the magazine, Janelle explained that it is of vital importance for women to use their platforms to amplify and unite the voices of other women and of members of the LGBTQ+ community to make sure that everyone has a seat at the table. “I think that women are coming together. I think women are realizing that, honestly, and in truth, we are stronger. Our voices are more amplified when we are aligned and we are collaborative. My motto is always, ” don’t hate, collaborate.’ And I’m seeing that a lot with women. It is important for the world to see that unite us,” he said.
Janelle continued, “Being a member of the LGBTQI+ community is an honor. We are aligned it is important and powerful in the face of those in the position of power that have the aim of dividing and those in the position of power that are abusing their power and trying to take away certain rights for those of us who only want to love and live and be able to breathe in peace.”
