Candy Montgomery: The Real Story Behind Betty Gore Murder

30 years ago, since Texas housewife Candy Montgomery killed her friend Betty Gore with an ax on the night of June 13, 1980. In an upcoming limited series titled CandyUniversal , the Content of Productions to shed some light on the chilling events that led to Betty’s untimely death. The series is set to star The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Elisabeth Moss as Candy, and have a deeper look into what made this mother of two with a loving husband and a beautiful home on the outskirts of committing a murder.

Despite the fact that Candy still has not been assigned to a network or given an expected debut date, the series will be executive produced by Moss, Mad Men‘s Robin Veith, The Law Of the co-creator of Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, and Lindsey McManus. “I’ve been waiting to play an anti-heroine for a while now, and have been trying to work with Robin again after Mad Men for even longer, so when she asked me if I wanted to play a housewife from Texas who, as some would say, got away with murder, I simply said, ‘Where do I sign?'” Moss said. “I think that is really going to be like no other [show] we have done, and that will be a role like none I’ve ever played.” Read ahead to find out more about Candy infamous crime.

How Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore Meet?

Candy was a loving mother and housewife in Wylie, TX that he spent his free time to teach others the word of the Bible. A devout church-goer, Candy met Bethany (Betty) at The Methodist Church in Lucas, where the two formed a close friendship and eventually developed a mutual hatred for each other after Candy developed feelings for Betty’s husband, Allan Gore.

Candy Montgomery Affair With Allan Gore

Candy is married with Pat Montgomery, an electrical engineer from the university of Texas Instruments, in the decade of the ’70. Despite the fact that his family was wealthy and Sweets enjoyed being a housewife, she found herself bored at home. She first developed feelings for Allan during a church volleyball game in 1978, during which the two collided while making a move to hit the ball at the same time. After the choir practice one day, 28 years ago, he confessed his feelings to Allan, he told Candy he loved his wife too much to have an adventure.

During that time, Betty taught elementary school in Wylie, and was pregnant with her second child. Betty it was hard to cope when her husband leaves her home alone to go away on frequent business trips, and Allan was unhappy with their prediction of the sex life, putting strain on your marriage. Almost three weeks after Caramel he confessed his feelings to Allan, he called on his 29th birthday, and invited her to meet him at a car repair shop in McKinney, TX.

For weeks, the two discussed, at length, the rules of the adventure, and that there would be no emotional attachment involved. Finally, after careful planning, the affair began at the Continental Inn in December. 12, 1978. For the next four months, the lovers meet in the Motel, every other week, to take great precautions to keep their romance hidden from their spouses. At the same time, Candy continued to play the perfect housewife, which was held playdates between their children and the shed blood of the children, and even threw Betty a baby shower.

During the next few months, Sweets, and Allan continued their relationship, to escape whenever possible. However, his appointment became less and less frequent once Betty gave birth. Feeling guilty for lying to Betty and Pat, Candy, was proposed to end the matter and decided to think about it, without taking a final decision. Meanwhile, Betty had begun to notice changes in her husband and felt deeply depressed by the lack of desire to have sex with her. She complained of aches and pains, and began to take prescription painkillers to soothe their anxieties. Soon after, Betty and Allan attended a marriage counseling session in their church, which helped them to understand more clearly and resulted in Allan and Candy calling off their relationship shortly after.

The Murder of Betty Gore

On the night of Friday, June 13, 1980, Allan was out of town for a business trip and found it strange that his wife — who hated to be left alone at home — did not answer their calls. Slightly concerned, he asked his neighbor Richard Parker to knock on the front door and to see if Betty was in the house. Betty did not answer, so Allan called Candy to see if she had heard from Betty that day. Candy insisted Betty seemed to be fine when she saw her before that day when she picked up her daughter bathing suit, and said that Allan nothing happened.

After a couple of phone calls, Allan grew more concerned and stayed on the phone with their friends to receive updates as they are investigated more in Betty’s potential disappearance. At home, the two cars were in the garage and the lights were on, which is even more strange that Betty did not answer. Several hours after Allan had the first suspicion that something was wrong, his pursuit of the part of the neighbors came through the Gores’ daughter Bethany in her crib and Betty’s dead body in the utility room.

Devastated by the news, Allan is called Candy, who was babysitting her daughter Alice at the time and sought comfort in it. After some investigation, the police found a bloody footprint at the scene of the crime, and the news spread quickly throughout the city. As soon as Candy heard about the mark, she set to work on the destruction of the plants in your favorite summer sandals with a pair of scissors of garden.

The Research and the Consequences of Candy Montgomery for the Crime

Candy quickly became the main suspect in the case of Betty’s death, after his own report that she was the last to see her alive. Candy’s story about the events of the day gave the police no reason to believe that she was the real killer, until Allan finally admitted that he had just finished a love affair with Sweets for several months before, giving him a reason to commit a murder. Candy was accused of murder and soon on bail.

Despite its potential involvement in the case, Candy received unconditional support from the church and soon contracted Non-Crowder, a lawyer that she knew of the church, to represent it in the case. In order to help Candy better remember the events that took place on the 13th of June 1980, she and Crowder hired Dr. Fred Fason, a psychiatrist and clinical hypnotist — after a couple of sessions of hypnosis — determined that Candy was suffering from a deeply rooted childhood trauma that had caused a huge anger inside of her as an adult.

In the court, Sweet, stated that Betty had confronted her about her affair with Allan on the morning of his death. According to Candy’s claims, Betty had attacked him with a three-foot long axe in the shed blood in the house and demanded that they never see Allan again. After a brief struggle in the utility room which resulted in a wound in the Candy stand, took advantage of Betty’s poor goal and gained control of the axe as Betty lost her balance. Full of his own rage, Candy brought the axe blade down on the back of Betty’s head. While the blow was serious, Betty was not dead and the two women struggled back and forth for control of the axe for several minutes, until the Caramel grabbed the handle and used the last of his strength to kill Betty, leaving it with 41 ax wounds. The trial lasted a couple of days more, but Candy was found not guilty.

The case later inspired A Murder In a Small Town, a television film that originally premiered on CBS on Tuesday, May 22, 1990.
