Dan and Nate are back together again! For Variety‘s Actors on Actors seriesPenn Badgley and Chace Crawford happy Gossip Girl fans of all parties, with a virtual meeting. In addition to talk about their latest roles in You and The Guys, respectively, also remembered his time on the hit CW drama and the spectacle of the long-lasting impact on the fans of today.
“People wanted to see a show like Gossip Girl because it was aspirational.”
“People wanted to see a show like Gossip Girl because it was aspirational. It was like an escape. It seemed that affected a culture in line because this is the aspirational fantastic vision of excess and wealth,” Badgley said. “But now, cut to 13 years later, people are not interested in that. And I think with reason. Now that you are interested in the deconstruction of why we are so fascinated with that in the first place. We are interested in the deconstruction of the systems of privilege. I’m not saying that our television programs are doing, but I am saying that is what people are most interested in, therefore, these programs reflect.”
While many fans (myself included) rewatch Gossip Girl time and time again on Netflix, Badgley and Crawford have a hard time rewatching the series. In fact, the last time that Badgley saw an episode was when he saw his wife Domino Kirke before your wedding. “I remember that, even then, has nothing to do with the show, but it was very difficult to see”, he admitted. “These snapshots of itself when it is in the 20, 21, 22 years of age. Who can enjoy that? Sometimes it is uncomfortable.” Even so, Badgley and Crawford, he admitted that it might be fun to rewatch an old episode, and live-tweet together.
Of course, one of the most fun parts of the interview was when Badgley brought a gift he received from then-girlfriend Blake Lively: the first iPhone. “I literally was like, ‘I don’t want this. It is so cumbersome, and has all these applications in it.'” Oh, how times have changed. See her cute of the previous meeting.
