Michelle McNamara, the writer behind the book I’m going to Be Gone in the Dark that inspired HBO’s new documentary of the same name, spent years tracking the Golden State Killer, and this search was at the centre of its history. McNamara, who was married to actor Patton Oswalt, who devoted his life to the true crime, specifically the Golden State Killer case, but he died in his sleep two years before his book on the case was published.
McNamara, who grew up in the state of Illinois before moving to los ANGELES to pursue TELEVISION and film writing, completed after his the passion for the real crime after getting to California. She quickly became fascinated by the East Area Rapist, Original Night Stalker, and the Visalia Ransacker, among other stories. But in her research, she was able to bind groups of series of murders along the ground in a guilty: the Golden State Killer. The killer, according to The New York Timescommitted more than 50 sexual assaults and 10 murders in the 1970’s and 1980’s. It was not until McNamara connects the pieces which gave him the nickname of “Golden State Killer”.
Your goal with your book I’m going to Be Gone in the Dark I was going to be able to name the Golden State Killer, but she died before she got to that point. McNamara worked on the book for years, according to The New York Timesbut, on the 21st of April 2016, Oswalt discovered dead in his home.
In 2018, a suspect in the Golden State Killer case, later identified as Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., he was captured and tied to multiple crimes. McNamara’s book has been updated and published just before the Golden State Killer case was brought to court. Other true crime writers helped Oswalt finished your book, so that their work could be recognized. “This book had to be finished,” Oswalt said The New York Times. “You know how horrible this guy was, there was this feeling of, you’re not going to silence another victim. Michelle died, but his testimony is going to get out of there.”
In your search for tracking the Golden State Killer, McNamara dealt with the anxiety and insomnia and was prosecuted for the atrocious crimes the murderer committed. “She had overloaded her mind with information with very dark implications,” Oswalt said The New York Times. He didn’t know it until after she died, but she leaned on the prescription of drugs to treat anxiety of trying to catch a killer, and that finally contributed to his death. However, their work was not in vain, as they helped the police finally catch a suspect in the Golden State Killer case a few years later. DeAngelo Jr. has not yet been sentenced for the crimes.
